Why book the food tour private?

Same 10 Tastes route, same stroopwafels warm from the iron, same 400-year-old brown bars. The difference is everything in between: the guide is yours, the pace is yours, and the stories bend to who's standing in front of them.

Grandparents who like to sit down? We sit down. Kids who won't touch herring? The guide finds them something they will. Someone in a wheelchair? We swap the route and the stops for ones that work. A halal or vegan table? We build the stops around it. Only free after work? We can start as late as 19:00. Celebrating something? Tell us, we like an excuse.

"We decided last minute to do a private tour, so it was just 4 of us. That was a great decision. Maria tailored the experience to what we wanted to do. [...] 3+ hours flew by."

How fast can you book?

A private food tour can sometimes be booked same-day. We answer WhatsApp quickly, and if a guide is free, you're on. One family put it better than we could:

"our original tour plans fell through- amazingly we were able to book a private tour for the same afternoon via their WhatsApp- they were super responsive and they were even able to meet us at our hotel with an extra stroller. Maria was very gracious and patient with our kids"
Coastal, TripAdvisor
"Tried a range of aged Gouda - delicious. [...] Stroopwafels at Hans Egstorf - the smell of cinnamon, clove and caramel had us upon walking into this beautiful shop. [...] Learned about Brown Pubs, hidden gardens and even found a hidden church! [...] No need for lunch today!!"
Sharonb, TripAdvisor

What will you actually taste?

The same 10+ tastings guests rave about on the public tour: aged Gouda in the Gastrovino cellar, warm stroopwafels from a 200-year-old bakery, cured North Sea herring at the fishmonger, Dutch pralines, poffertjes in butter, and apple pie with a jenever or a glass of wine in a Jordaan brown bar. On a private tour we can swap stops around your tastes, more cheese, less fish, all sweet, you decide.

The full stop-by-stop route is on the 10 Tastes of Amsterdam page.

How booking works

  1. 1

Pick a date for your private food tour on the booking page, or message us on WhatsApp if it's short notice.

  2. 2

Tell us about your group: dietary needs, kids, occasions, pace. We plan the stops around it.

  3. 3

Your guide meets you at the start point (or your hotel lobby, if you put it in the special requests) and the eating begins.

Private food tour questions, answered

How much does a private food tour in Amsterdam cost? +

Our private 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour is €230 a person for a couple, €137.50 a person for four and €93 a person for ten, VAT included, and a private tour for one is €420. That covers your own guide for 3.5 hours, 10+ tastings and drinks. Up to 15 can walk with one guide if you ask, and a bigger party splits into smaller groups, each with its own guide; ask us for the exact price.

What is the difference between the private and the public tour? +

The private and the public food tour share the same route and the same food. The difference is that it's just your group and your guide, at your pace. We can shift the start time, linger where you're having fun, skip what you don't care about, and work around wheelchairs, strollers, picky kids or dietary needs.

Can you handle dietary restrictions on a private tour? +

Dietary restrictions are easiest to handle on a private food tour. Vegan and halal both work, because the stops are picked around your group, and vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free are routine. Say it at booking. Allergies we want as early as you can manage, because the venues need the warning too.

How late can a private food tour start? +

A private tour can start as late as 19:00, which is why it suits guests who spend the day in museums or in meetings. Morning and afternoon starts are open too, so tell us the time that fits your day and we will build around it. If the cured herring is on your Amsterdam list, book 16:00 or earlier, because that is the one tasting an evening tour drops.

Can we book last minute? +

A private food tour can often be booked last minute. Guests have booked a private tour for the same afternoon over WhatsApp. Message us at +31 6 23028032 and we'll tell you straight away what's possible.

Where does the private tour start? +

A private food tour usually starts at Gastrovino, Spuistraat 330, in the city center. Staying at a central hotel? Your guide collects you on foot from the lobby instead, at no extra charge, and from a hotel farther out you ride the metro or tram in together. Put the hotel in the special requests when you book.

Is a private food tour good for families with kids? +

A private food tour is our most-booked option for families. The guide adjusts stories, stops and snacks to your crew, and there are non-alcoholic drinks for the young ones. One parent's verdict, in their own words: 'my 11 year old gave it 10 out of 10'.

How big can a private group be? +

Up to 12 guests walk with one guide as standard, or up to 15 with one guide if you ask, and a bigger party splits into smaller groups, each with its own guide. For company outings of 2 to 200 people, see our team building page, that's a dedicated setup with multiple guides.

Can I cancel or move a private food tour? +

A private food tour can be cancelled up to 24 hours before the start for a full refund. For bookings above €1,000, such as a large company group, the free cancellation window is 48 hours. Want a different date or time instead? Message us on WhatsApp or email and we move the booking if a guide is free.

Is tipping expected on a private food tour? +

Tipping is not expected on a private food tour in Amsterdam, or anywhere in the Netherlands: service is included by law and your guide is paid properly. If they made your day, a tip is welcome and always optional, and a review on Google or Tripadvisor does even more for them.

What language is a private food tour in? +

English is standard. Dutch, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Ukrainian are possible on the private food tours and the private bike food tour, depending on guide availability, so write the language in the special requests when you book.

What happens if it rains on a private food tour? +

The tour runs rain or shine, this is Amsterdam after all. Most tastings are indoors, and your guide adjusts the walking between them when it pours. Bring a rain jacket, or ask your hotel for an umbrella; most hotels keep them at the door.

What should I wear? +

Comfortable shoes matter most: the route is about 2.5 km / 1.5 miles on canal-side cobblestones. Amsterdam weather turns fast, so bring a light rain jacket. None of the stops has a dress code.

Do I need cash on a private food tour? +

No. Every tasting and both drinks are included and paid in advance, so there is nothing to pay at any stop. The only thing you might want cash for is a tip for your guide, and that works via PayPal too.

Can we pay in US dollars? +

Prices are in euros, and your card is charged in euros at checkout. Your bank converts the amount, so check whether your card adds a foreign transaction fee.

Can our company pay by invoice? +

Yes. Send us the company name, address and VAT number with your enquiry and we invoice your company directly, or we send you a card payment link instead. Prices are in euros.

What if we do not drink alcohol on the private food tour? +

Skipping the alcohol is no problem on the private 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour, and nothing is lost. Any drink can be swapped for coffee, tea or a soft drink, so just tell your guide at the first stop. Guests under 18 get the alcohol-free option by default, as 18 is the legal drinking age in the Netherlands.

Will we be full by the end of a private food tour? +

The private 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour serves 10+ tastings across 5 stops, which replaces a full meal for most guests. Arrive hungry.

Do we sit down to eat on a private food tour? +

You usually sit down at the first and the last stop, and often somewhere in the middle as well. The rest is standing or walking, because these are tiny places in the canal belt, some of them 400 years old. Want a seat at every stop? Say so when you book and we build the route around that.

Are there toilets along the way on a private food tour? +

There is a toilet at the first stop and one at the last. In between, your guide knows the cafés along the route where you can step in for a minute, so just say the word.

I am pregnant. Can I still do a private food tour? +

Yes, and pregnant guests join regularly. The one stop worth knowing about in advance is the herring, which is cured rather than cooked. Plenty of guests skip that one and your guide will have something else ready, no explanation needed. Whether you eat it is your call and not ours, and nothing here is medical advice. Mention it when you book and your guide will keep an eye out for you.

How much walking is involved on a private food tour? +

The private 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour is an easy walk of about 2.5 km / 1.5 miles through central Amsterdam and the Jordaan. Because it is just your group, the guide keeps a relaxed pace for slow walkers and adjusts the route a little if needed.

Do we have to eat the herring on a private food tour? +

No. The herring is cured rather than cooked, and plenty of guests pass on it. Your guide will have something else ready, no explanation needed.

Can a picky eater, or a picky child, do a private food tour? +

Yes, and a food tour suits a picky eater better than a restaurant: each tasting is a few bites, not a plate you are committed to, and you skip what you do not fancy. On a private tour the route is built around your group, so tell us when you book and your guide plans around it.

I am lactose intolerant. What can I eat on a private food tour? +

A lactose intolerance can come along on a private food tour. The route is built around your group, so tell us when you book and your guide settles the dairy stops with the venues before you arrive.

Rather join a group? The public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam runs daily at €79 per person. Want something fully custom, bikes or a boat? See all private tours or the custom private tour.
