Vegetarian, Vegan, Halal or Gluten-Free? What Works on Which Tour

One rule covers almost all of this: tell us when you book. After that we will be honest about what the day can do and what it cannot. Some of it is a flat yes, some of it depends on the tour, and one or two things are only possible on a private tour. Below is which is which.

Who this page is for

You eat vegan, or you cannot have gluten, or someone in the group has an allergy, and you want to know whether a food tour is still a good idea before you pay for one. Fair question. Our public tour runs with a max of 12 guests on a set route, so it flexes but it does not rewrite itself. A private tour is built around your group, so it can.

Every answer here is the one your guide would give you. Where we do not have a firm yes, this page says so instead of guessing on your behalf.

Vegetarian and pescatarian

The easy one

Vegetarian and pescatarian work well on the 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour, no problem there. Tell us when booking so your guide knows before the first stop.

Haarlem is the same story with vegetarian and pescatarian options at every stop, and Utrecht has them too. On a private food tour, vegetarian and pescatarian are no trouble at all, and on the private full day they can usually be accommodated at most stops with advance notice.

Vegan

Partial in public, complete in private

Here is the honest version. On the public tour, vegan is partial: about 70 to 80% of our stops have a vegan alternative, not all of them. Tell us when booking and your guide will steer you round the gaps.

If you would rather not have gaps at all, a private Amsterdam food tour is the answer. The route is built around your group, so it can be fully vegan. A custom private tour can be planned around vegan from scratch as well.

For vegan on the Haarlem or Utrecht food tours, ask us before you book.

Halal

Yes, no notice needed

A private Amsterdam food tour can be fully halal. Tell us when you book, and your guide settles the stops with the venues before you arrive. Halal is also one of the things a custom private tour gets built around, and we do it all the time.

Halal works on the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour as well. Book a departure like anyone else, the same day if that is what suits you, and note halal when you book. You do most stops with the group, usually with the vegetarian option, and the Surinamese stop has plenty of halal meat.

Gluten-free

Yes, and it depends on which tour

Gluten-free is not one answer, it is five, so here is each tour in its own words rather than one flattened promise.

Coeliac, or celiac if you spell it the American way, changes nothing about how to ask: tell us when you book and we will say what that tour can do on that day.

10 Tastes of Amsterdam
We can often do gluten-free, and earlier tours tend to have more flexibility. It comes down to the day's vendors, and we will do our best with that.
Private Amsterdam food tour
Gluten-free is no trouble. On the private full day, gluten-free guests can usually be accommodated at most stops with advance notice, though some Dutch specialties are harder to adapt, and we will be honest about what works and what does not.
Haarlem and Utrecht
Most venues have gluten-free alternatives, including gluten-free beer at Jopenkerk in Haarlem and at Olivier in Utrecht.
Food tour with canal cruise, and the private boat
Gluten-free can be arranged with advance notice, so tell us when you book.
Wine and cheese
Gluten-light is the word this tour uses, not gluten-free. Let us know in advance and we will prepare suitable cheeses, breads and spreads, and most dietary preferences can be accommodated with notice.

Allergies

Tell us early, and we will tell you straight

On a private Amsterdam food tour, tell us early if there is an allergy, so your guide can settle the stops with the venues before you arrive. A custom private tour can be built nut-free.

On the Amsterdam bike tour the answer is in many cases yes. Let us know in advance about any dietary needs, allergies, or strong dislikes, and we will do our best to shape the food stops accordingly.

Nuts, dairy, gluten and shellfish can come along on the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour. Most stops have an alternative, and where a stop has none you skip that bite and get a little extra at another one. Tell us when you book.

Alcohol-free

Nothing is lost

Alcohol-free works well on the 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour. The two included drinks can be swapped for coffee, tea or a soft drink, and the bottle of water is included either way. Just tell your guide at the first stop.

The wine and cheese tour is built for adults and around the pairings, so that one is different. We can adapt it for non-drinkers on request, so let us know when booking.

When to tell us

At booking, in the notes field, in as much detail as you like. That gives your guide time to check with the venues rather than improvise at the counter. If you only remember on the day, tell your guide at the first stop anyway, because late notice still beats no notice.

Booking for a group where half the list has something? Send us the list. We will tell you which tour fits, and if the answer is a custom private tour, we will say that too.

Dietary questions, answered

Can I join the 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour as a vegetarian? +

Vegetarian and pescatarian work well on the 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour, no problem there. Tell us when booking so your guide knows before the first stop. Our Haarlem and Utrecht food tours have vegetarian and pescatarian options too, at every stop in Haarlem.

Is the Amsterdam food tour vegan friendly? +

The public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour is partly vegan friendly, and we would rather say that than surprise you. Vegan is partial: about 70 to 80% of our stops have a vegan alternative, not all of them, and your guide will steer you round the gaps if you tell us when booking. A private Amsterdam food tour is the one that can be fully vegan, because the route is built around your group.

Is there a halal Amsterdam food tour? +

A private Amsterdam food tour can be fully halal. The route is built around your group, so your guide settles the stops with the venues before you arrive. Halal works on the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour too, and it needs no notice. Book a departure like anyone else, the same day if that suits you, and note halal when you book. You do most stops with the group, usually with the vegetarian option, and the Surinamese stop has plenty of halal meat.

Can you do gluten-free on an Amsterdam food tour? +

We can often do gluten-free on the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour, and earlier tours tend to have more flexibility, though it depends on the day's vendors. On a private Amsterdam food tour gluten-free is no trouble. On the Haarlem and Utrecht food tours most venues have gluten-free alternatives, including gluten-free beer at Jopenkerk in Haarlem and at Olivier in Utrecht. Coeliac or celiac, either spelling, tell us when you book and we will say what that tour can do on that day.

What if I have a nut allergy or another food allergy? +

On a private Amsterdam food tour, tell us early if there is an allergy, so your guide can settle the stops with the venues before you arrive. A custom private Amsterdam tour can be built nut-free. On the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour, nuts, dairy, gluten and shellfish can come along. Most stops have an alternative, and where a stop has none you skip that bite and get a little extra at another one, so tell us when you book.

What if I do not drink alcohol on the food tour? +

Skipping alcohol on the 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour costs you nothing. The two included drinks can be swapped for coffee, tea or a soft drink, and the bottle of water is included either way. Just tell your guide at the first stop.

Which Amsterdam food tour should I book if my whole group has dietary restrictions? +

A private Amsterdam food tour is the one to book when a whole group has restrictions, or a custom private tour if the list is long. Vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, halal, nut-free and kid-friendly are all things a custom tour gets planned around, because it starts from scratch instead of bending a fixed route. Tell us in your message and we will plan stops that work.

Do the Amsterdam bike tour and the boat tours handle dietary needs? +

The Amsterdam bike tour handles dietary needs in many cases, yes. It is best to let us know in advance about any dietary needs, allergies, or strong dislikes, and we will do our best to shape the food stops accordingly. On the private boat tour and on the food tour with canal cruise, vegetarian, pescatarian and gluten-free can be arranged with advance notice.

I am pregnant. Can I still do the food tour? +

Yes, and pregnant guests join regularly. The one stop worth knowing about in advance is the herring, which is cured rather than cooked. Plenty of guests skip that one and your guide will have something else ready, no explanation needed. Whether you eat it is your call and not ours, and nothing here is medical advice. Mention it when you book and your guide will keep an eye out for you.

Do I have to eat the herring? +

No. The herring is cured rather than cooked, and plenty of guests skip that one; your guide will have something else ready, no explanation needed. That is how every tasting on the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour works: where a stop has nothing for you, you skip that bite and get a little extra at another one.

Can a picky eater, or a picky child, do the food tour? +

Yes, and a food tour suits a picky eater better than a restaurant: each tasting is a few bites, not a plate you are committed to, and you skip what you do not fancy. On the public tour that means 10+ tastings across 5 stops with an alternative at most of them. On a private tour the guide adjusts stops and snacks to your crew, and a kid who will not touch herring gets something they will.

I am lactose intolerant. What can I eat on the tour? +

Dairy can come along on the public 10 Tastes of Amsterdam tour: most stops have an alternative, and where a stop has none you skip that bite and get a little extra at another one, so tell us when you book. One guest wrote that our guide was very accommodating towards a friend who was lactose intolerant, and that is the standard. On a private tour, tell us early so the guide can settle the stops with the venues before you arrive.
