Amsterdam Food Tour: What You Actually Eat in 3 Hours (10 Tastes)

FOX 8’s New Day Cleveland flew to Amsterdam, handed us three hours, and let the cameras roll. It was a private 10 Tastes of Amsterdam with two very game hosts, a producer, and a lot of takes. David Moss and Natalie Herbick ate a whole cured herring, drank port before noon, and left in a stroopwafel hat.

What American TV saw in three hours

This was booked as a private tour, so it ran the way private tours run: around the two people standing in front of the guide. Five stops, ten tastes, and nobody leaving feeling like a tourist. Watch the video above, then read what actually happened.

The cured herring, in one bite

First stop was a fishmonger about to close. Herring is the Dutch sashimi: cured, never cooked, served with raw onion and a pickle. The traditional Volendam way is to hold it by the tail and drop it in whole. Natalie went for it. David negotiated for two bites. We accept two bites.

“You had no idea what you were signing up for.”

Gouda, and the port that comes with it

Every one of our food tours starts at Gastronomie Nostalgie, a cheese and wine shop where the cheese is unpasteurised farmer’s Gouda and the wine is Portuguese port. The Portuguese have been trading into Amsterdam for four hundred years, which makes this pairing older than most countries. The finale is a four-time prize-winning goat cheese called Sikkepit, which translates roughly to “grumpy old goat.”

“I’ve never tasted wine that tastes like that.”

The bar Walt Disney drank in

After the war, the owner of our third stop went to Broadway in person to sell Americans on his café. It worked. Walt Disney came, Mick Jagger came. The house drink is a Dutch genever poured to the actual brim of the glass, which means the first sip happens with your hands behind your back and your mouth at the table. It is called Dutch courage for a reason. It comes with salted beef and crispy chicken skin.

Warm stroopwafels, off a silver platter

We end where every Amsterdam food tour should: a caramel waffle pressed warm in front of you, handed over on a silver platter, with a hat that reads find your inner stroopwafel.

“It’s better than Belgian waffles.” Said on American television, on the record.

Want a tour like this one?

The 10 Tastes of Amsterdam runs daily, in small groups, and takes three hours. No two of them are identical, and that is rather the point: the guide reads the group, the season decides what is worth eating that week, and the stories change with the weather. If there is something you have been dying to taste, or something you would rather skip, tell us when you book and we will build the route around it.

Want it just for your own group, the way the FOX 8 crew had it? That is our private food tour. Camera crew optional.

Not our first time on American television

In 2020 CuriosityStream made The History of Home, a documentary series narrated by Nick Offerman. They needed someone to explain Amsterdam from the water, so Otto took the crew out on a canal boat and talked them through the houses, the hooks and the people who built them.

Otto still guides. If you would rather have him than a camera crew, ask for him when you book, or read what Adam & Eve Tours is before you pick a tour.

The creators came too

Three of them filmed the whole thing. Here is what they made.
