Amsterdam Before (or After) Your River Cruise

Your Rhine cruise starts or ends here. Most guests get one to three days in the city, then spend half of it wondering where to eat. Here's the local answer: spend that time tasting Amsterdam with people who live here, and let us handle the transfers.

Why river cruisers book us first

Whether you sail with Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon, Tauck or Uniworld, the Amsterdam days on either side of the cruise are yours to fill. A food tour is the efficient choice: it's lunch, a walking tour and a history lesson in one, and it works on jet lag legs. Max 12 guests on the public tour, no lines, no tourist traps.

You'll taste what the Netherlands actually eats: fresh North Sea herring at a fishmonger, aged Gouda in a canal-house cellar, warm stroopwafels, bitterballen with a local beer. And because we run cruise pickups and shore excursions all season, we know exactly how ship schedules work.

1, 2 or 3 days in Amsterdam before your river cruise?

1 day

One perfect food day

Drop your bags at the hotel and join our 10 Tastes of Amsterdam food tour: 10+ tastings across the canal belt and the Jordaan in about 3 hours. It doubles as a walking tour, so you see the city while you eat it.

2 days

Food day + water day

Day one is the food tour. Day two, see Amsterdam the way it was built to be seen: from the canals, with drinks and Dutch bites on a private boat, plus time for the Rijksmuseum or a slow morning in the Nine Streets.

3 days

Add a day trip or go custom

With a third day you can taste your way through Haarlem or Utrecht, 20 to 25 minutes by train, or ask us to build a custom private day around whatever your group loves. History, cheese, bikes, all of it.

Where river cruise ships dock in Amsterdam, and how to get there

River cruise ships traditionally dock at the quays behind Centraal Station, a short walk from the old center. From 2026, more and more sailings, including AmaWaterways, start in Zaandam instead, about 20 minutes from central Amsterdam by road. That's an easy transfer if someone plans it, and an expensive scramble if nobody does.

We arrange the car or coach, keep your luggage on board during the tour, and time the drop-off to your embarkation window. Groups of any size, from a couple to a full charter with parallel tours. Landing at Schiphol first? The airport pickup from our Schiphol layover food tour works on arrival days too.

Good to know

River cruise questions, answered

How many days should we spend in Amsterdam before a river cruise? +

Two nights is the sweet spot. You land, sleep off the flight, and still get one full day for a food tour and one relaxed morning before embarkation. With one day you can do the highlights, with three you can add a day trip to Haarlem or Utrecht.

Where do river cruise ships dock in Amsterdam? +

Traditionally at the river quays behind Centraal Station, a short walk from the old center. From 2026 more departures shift to Zaandam, including AmaWaterways sailings, which is about 20 minutes from central Amsterdam by road. Check your line's documents, and if it's Zaandam, we can handle the transfer.

Can you drop us at the ship after the tour? +

Yes. We arrange hotel-to-ship and Schiphol-to-ship transfers by car or coach, and for groups the luggage simply stays on the coach during the tour. You step off the last tasting and onto your ship.

Is a food tour a good idea on arrival day? +

It's the best jet lag medicine we know. You stay outside, you stay moving, you eat well, and you're in bed by nine with the city already under your belt. If you land in the morning, an afternoon tour works beautifully.

Can we still get Anne Frank House tickets? +

They release ahead of time and sell out fast, so ask us as early as you can. We regularly secure tickets for our private groups, and our Anne Frank walking tour covers the story and the neighborhood even when the house itself is sold out.

What about dietary requirements? +

Tell us when you book. Vegetarian, pescatarian, gluten-free and most allergies are easy to plan around, especially on a private tour.
