A full day of Amsterdam, tasted slowly

If a two-hour food tour feels too quick, this is the unhurried alternative. Spend six hours exploring Amsterdam with your own local guide, eating your way from the city center into the Jordaan, the Nine Streets, Chinatown, and the canal belt, with time for drinks, breaks, and the kind of stories you only get from someone who actually lives here. It’s built for travelers who want one substantial Amsterdam day already planned for them.

Because it’s private, the route flexes around your group: more walking or more sitting, more sweet or more savory, more history or more food. You won’t be rushed through a checklist. You’ll have the day to actually enjoy the city. It’s the relaxed version of an Amsterdam day done right: you eat, your guide handles everything else.

What to expect on the day

Your day begins at Gastrovino Amsterdam at Spuistraat 330, a central spot just an 8-minute walk from Dam Square and about 5 minutes from Rokin Metro, with Uber drop-off possible nearby. If your hotel is within 10-15 minutes on foot, your guide can pick you up there instead. If not, you can either make your own way to the start point, or we’ll arrange a taxi pickup for an additional fee. After a quick introduction and a check-in on your group’s preferences and dietary needs, we start the tour by sampling up to 10 different cheeses.

We follow with classic Dutch sweet and savory bites: fresh stroopwafels from a long-standing bakery, Dutch cheese tastings, and traditional herring or kibbeling if it’s on the route that day. From there, the walk usually winds through Spui and the Flower Market into the Nine Streets and the Jordaan, with stops for handcrafted chocolate, poffertjes, and a sit-down moment in a Jordaan brown cafe.

In the afternoon, the day shifts into a different rhythm. With time still on the clock, you explore neighborhoods most short tours skip: the old canals, Chinatown, and the wider Red Light area, with stops for international flavors, Dutch apple pie, or a drink in a historic spot your guide knows well. Because the tour is private and runs six hours, there’s room for what shorter food tours can’t fit: longer breaks, more drinks, more questions, and detours into corners of the city you’d never find on your own.

Your guide adjusts the route, pace, and stop length throughout the day, so by the time the tour ends, you’ve eaten well, walked comfortably, and seen a real cross-section of Amsterdam, not just the postcards.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is six hours too long for a food tour? +

For most guests, no, and that's the point. The day is paced for comfort, not endurance. You'll have plenty of sit-down moments, drink breaks, and time between tastings, so the six hours feel relaxed rather than rushed. If you'd prefer a shorter, more classic food-tour route, the Private Amsterdam Food Tour covers the highlights in less time.

Is the food enough to count as meals? +

Yes. With 10+ tastings spread across the day, most guests don't need lunch or dinner on top. Come hungry and pace yourself early, because the day is generous.

Can you pick us up from our hotel? +

Hotel pickup on foot is included if your hotel is centrally located and within walking distance of the starting area. If you're staying further out, your guide can arrange a taxi pickup for an additional fee, or you can meet at the central starting point.

Can you accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies? +

Often, yes: vegetarian, pescatarian, and gluten-free guests can usually be accommodated at most stops with advance notice. Some Dutch specialties are harder to adapt, so we'll be honest about what works and what doesn't when you tell us about your group.

Is this suitable for older travelers, cruise guests, or slower walkers? +

Yes. Because the tour is private, the pace and route adjust to your group. There are plenty of breaks, sit-down stops, and short walking segments built into the day. If anyone in your group has mobility concerns, share that when you book and your guide will plan accordingly.
